New York City Mayor Eric Adams used his fourth State of the City address Thursday to unveil a $650 million investment to people experiencing homelessness and severe mental illness.
“There’s no denying that New Yorkers are anxious about the future,” Adams said at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. “Extreme costs are forcing too many people, especially working-class families, to make hard choices between groceries or child care, medicine or clothing, making the rent or moving out.”
The embattled mayor, who is facing federal corruption charges while he runs for reelection, said the city will add 900 beds to its alternative housing program to large shelter facilities and vowed the city will open a support facility for people needing psychiatric and substance abuse care.
